All guides

Compaction equipment ensures a stable base for pavers, concrete, and asphalt. We stock plate compactors, jumping jack tampers, and related gear so you can compact soil, gravel, and base material the right way.

Plate compactors

Ideal for driveways, patios, and base prep. They use vibration to densify granular materials. Choose by plate size and centrifugal force—heavier units compact deeper and faster.

Jumping jack tampers

Also called rammers or trench compactors. They use impact to compact cohesive soils and backfill. The right choice for trenches, around footings, and confined areas where a plate won't fit.

How to choose

For large, flat, granular areas (gravel, sand, base rock), use a plate compactor. For trenches and cohesive soil, use a jumping jack. For pavers, a plate compactor or a dedicated paver roller may be appropriate depending on the project.

FAQ

What size plate compactor for a driveway?
For residential driveways, a plate compactor in the 3,000–5,000 lb force range is typical. For larger areas or commercial work, consider a heavier unit or a roller.
When to use a jumping jack instead of a plate compactor?
Use a jumping jack (tamping rammer) for trenches, backfill, and cohesive soils where impact compaction is more effective. Use a plate compactor for granular base, sand, and large flat areas.
Can I use a plate compactor on gravel?
Yes. Plate compactors work well on gravel and crushed stone. Add water in small amounts if needed to achieve density, and make multiple passes.
